There’s another attraction winding its way down this tourist destination street, and their loud squawking will stop you in your tracks.  Ever since the 2003 documentary about the homeless musician who befriended the birds, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, I’ve been fascinated by this flock!  I read the movie was among the top 30 nonfiction features ever released.

The flock is growing to more than 200 according to Mark Bittner (known as the Parrot man) on his website.  He says he still watches over them.

Our car actually broke down early in the morning right at the bottom of Lombard. But instead of cursing bad luck, I grabbed my video camera and passed the time waiting for a tow by engaging with the Parrots.  What a wonderful way to start the day!
